Channel 4 has announced that Hullraisers, the female-led comedy based in Hull, will not be returning for a third series. Here’s what we know about the decision and the show’s legacy.

Channel 4’s Decision

After two series, Channel 4 has decided not to renew Hullraisers, citing the need to carefully consider which shows to continue, rest, or conclude. A spokesperson expressed pride in the show’s achievements and its representation of regional voices.

We’re incredibly proud of Hullraisers and all it’s achieved, in particular, the show championed regional voices both on and off-screen and was widely praised for its celebration of Hull and its authentic representation of Northern working-class women.

Based on the Israeli series Little Mom, Hullraisers was adapted by writers Lucy Beaumont, Anne Marie O’Connor, and Caroline Moran. Despite initial success, with series one launching to 1.15 million viewers, viewership declined, with series two launching to just 370,000 viewers.

Recognition and Impact

Despite its cancellation, Hullraisers garnered attention internationally, being sold to IFC in the United States. It enjoyed popularity in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, with double the average audience for its time slot in the region. Before the show was even created Beaumont says that she tried to,

I’m trying to make comedy out of an area that’s massively underrepresented. What Hull needs is role models that are successful and entrepreneurial. It’s not a hard northern town. It’s actually really creative, really European and there’s a young energy there.

Executive producer, Hannah Farrell said before the launch of the second series,

Hullraisers still feels, to me anyway, very unique and a space that we don’t really explore in terms of comedy that often, which feels really exciting. It can be a bit edgy, a bit salty, but it also has bags of heart, so it sits somewhere in that place between.
