RTÉ has announced a pitch competition for a new comedy panel show, reminiscent of the popular ‘Mock the Week’. The proposed programme, set to air midweek post-watershed, aims to infuse the spontaneity and humour seen in shows like ‘Would I Lie to You’ and the now-ended ‘Mock the Week’, hosted by Irish comedian Dara O’Briain.

Seeking Innovative Approaches

Five people sitting in a row on stage, engaged in a discussion, with an ornate red and gold background in a theater setting.

The broadcaster seeks pitches that break traditional format expectations, drawing inspiration from unconventional shows like ‘Taskmaster’. According to a listing on RTE.ie, the winning pitch should deliver inventive challenges within a panel show framework, hosted by a skilled comedic anchor capable of driving the format.

In addition to the host, RTÉ is on the lookout for core contributors with diverse comedic styles. Chemistry between the host, contributors, and guests is paramount, along with strong writing and an understanding of successful panel show formats.

Well-Known Faces in the Running

Speculation is rife about potential hosts, with Joanne McNally, Brendan O’Connor, and Deirdre O’Kane reportedly in contention. The broadcaster has set a deadline for proposals of 12 pm noon on May 31st, aiming for an autumn 2024 debut for the completed show.

With anticipation building, RTÉ’s comedy panel show promises to inject fresh energy into the genre, showcasing the wit and talent of Irish comedians.

When ‘Mock The Week’ ended people were writing petitions and hoping it would come back so maybe this would be it’s spiritual successor? Deadline would be on noon, May 31.
