A new theatrical production is set to illuminate the lives and legacies of three of Britain’s most celebrated comedic talents: Eric Morecambe, Bob Monkhouse, and Tommy Cooper.
“The Last Laugh” serves as a heartfelt homage to the comedic genius of Morecambe, Monkhouse, and Cooper. Written and directed by the acclaimed Paul Hendy, the play originated from his award-winning short film of the same name.
Hendy’s previous work has garnered significant acclaim, including accolades such as ‘Best Film’ at the Manchester Film Festival and the ‘Special Audience Award’ at the Oxford Film Festival.
The production boasts an impressive ensemble, with Bob Golding reprising his role as Eric Morecambe, following his acclaimed portrayal in the Olivier Award-winning “Morecambe” by Tim Whitnall.
Simon Cartwright returns to the Edinburgh Fringe as Bob Monkhouse, building on his success with “The Man Called Monkhouse.” Damian Williams, known for his role in the national tour of “Being Tommy Cooper,” completes the trio. Paul Hendy, the mastermind behind the production, shares his inspiration:
I’ve always been fascinated by what makes something, or more importantly someone, funny. I wrote this piece to examine those very questions and to delve into the mechanics and intricacies behind the comedy.
As the fortieth anniversary of Tommy Cooper and Eric Morecambe’s passing approaches, “The Last Laugh” serves as a poignant tribute to the golden age of comedy. Hendy describes the play as his “love letter” to these comedic icons who brought laughter to generations of audiences.
Paul Hendy’s illustrious career spans writing, directing, and producing across various mediums, from film to television to theatre. His passion for entertainment is evident in his diverse body of work, including acclaimed projects such as “Morecambe” and “Lena.”
Simon Cartwright, a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, brings his wealth of experience as both an actor and impressionist to the role of Bob Monkhouse. Bob Golding, renowned for his portrayal of Eric Morecambe, has enjoyed success both on stage and screen, earning accolades for his performances.
“The Last Laugh” will premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe, running from July 31st to August 25th at the Assembly George Square Studios – Studio One. Tickets start from £12. Please note that the production will be dark on Monday, August 12th.
