Comedian Carl Hutchinson unveils his latest project, a  documentary titled “That’s The Show,” offering audiences an intimate glimpse into the life of a touring comic.

Life of a Touring Comic

A man on stage holding a microphone, wearing a dark t-shirt, speaking under a blue spotlight.

The hour-long documentary, set to premiere at the Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle on May 11th, delves into the highs and lows of Hutchinson’s journey on the road. It follows him during his ongoing Watch Till The End tour, and here you get to see the challenges and triumphs he faced as a comedian

When it’s going well, there’s really nothing better (Than stand-up)..

And he says there’s a lot of challenges involved as well, particularly trying to make other people laugh when you’ve had ‘a real bad day at home’.

Hutchinson’s documentary also features fellow North-East comedians Anth Young and Chris Ramsey. The documentary serves as a creative outlet and a means to maximise his time away from home, especially after becoming a father during the pandemic.

My daughter was born just after lockdown… I thought: ‘What else could I be doing while I’m away that won’t impact the family life?’

MOTIF Pictures and Inspirations

Reuniting with MOTIF Pictures, Hutchinson entrusts director Tautvydas Baranauskas with complete creative control. As Hutchinson puts it, he basically left it all up to MOTIF pictures and trusts them completely on editorial control.

Hutchinson draws inspiration from similarly formatted documentaries like Jerry Seinfeld’s ‘Comedian’ and shares his admiration for the late Barry Crimmins,

You can imagine how happy I was when Barry Crimmins came over to Edinburgh… I think I chewed his ear off talking about every part of that documentary.

Future Plans

With plans for further cinema screenings and an online release, Hutchinson remains optimistic about the film’s future. He acknowledges the demand and hopes for a stroke of luck in reaching a wider audience.

Just got to put ourselves out there and hope for a bit of luck!

Carl is currently on tour so we highly suggest catching his shows live and then take a look at the behind the scenes with the documentary! And if you’re looking for more comedy shows, we’ve got tons of those playing here at Big Belly Comedy Club 7 nights a week!
