The Crab Museum in Margate has delighted audiences with the announcement of the world’s funniest crab joke, following a recent competition that drew entries from far and wide. The winning joke, judged by an esteemed panel, goes: “Why did the crab cross the road? It didn’t. It used the sidewalk.”
A stellar panel of judges, including comedians Sally Phillips, Harry Hill, and Rose Matafeo, alongside other notable personalities, had the challenging task of selecting the winning joke.
The contest was held for inaugural World’s Funniest Crab Joke competition held in Margate by the Crab Museum, to celebrate an important date, The International Crab Day.
There were only two rules for the competition; one, you can’t joke about any explicit stuff, and strictly keep it PG, and two, lobsters could be used as a set-up but not the punchline.
Around 700 submissions came in but still some were disqualified for not keeping it family-friendly and some were just disqualified for scientific inaccuracy.
The comedians weren’t the only ones who decided. Crabs get a say too! I mean, it is their competition technically. With the help of tinned fish in bait bags and pieces of paper with the jokes written on them, the crabs have unanimously decided on the winner.
Though there wasn’t a lot to choose from since they only had to choose between the top 4 ranked by the judges. Second place came to another classic joke with a twist that goes like,
Man walks into a restaurant with a crab under his arm and says, ‘Do you make crab cakes?’ Manager answers, ‘Yes, we do.’ ‘Good,’ says the man, ‘because it’s his birthday.
Third place was,
Why didn’t the crab help the chicken cross the road? Because it was eaten by a pelican crossing.
And lastly,
What format do you have to save photos of crab soup on to? Floppy bisque.
The event was a way for the organizers to inspire environmental activism and bring light the diverse world of crabs. The museum opened in 2021 and is ‘Europe’s first and only museum dedicated to the decapod’.
The quality and quantity of jokes this year has been astounding. We’ve been pinching ourselves since the submissions closed! That said, laughing at jokes, much like learning about crabs, can be a powerful tool to help us reassess our relationship with our environment. You’d be surprised how quickly you can go from chuckling at crab gags to letting down SUV tires.
Spokesperson for the museum says that crabs are a way for us to learn more about climate change, biology, evolution, and even with a creative mind, even about humanity itself, and so much more!
This is why we created Crab Museum, to roll science, humour and philosophy into a unique and satisfyingly baffling day out.
Jokes and environmental awareness surprisingly go hand-in-hand and you can read more about it HERE! Plus, if you’re looking for more jokes, then head on over to Big Belly Comedy Club, where we’ve a bunch of hilarious comedy shows playing every night!
