A Unique Approach to Climate Communication

Renowned British comedian Jo Brand, along with other notable names such as Nish Kumar, Kiri Pritchard-McLean, and Jonathan Pie, has joined forces in Climate Science Translated with Professor Mark Maslin.

This initiative aims to translate complex climate science into humorous and relatable content, aiming to inspire millions to take action.

Harnessing the Power of Humour

Despite the gravity of the climate crisis, research reveals that just 2% of the public can name a climate scientist, while celebrities like Jo Brand enjoy widespread recognition. By leveraging the wit and charm of comedians, Climate Science Translated makes climate science more accessible to the masses.

Jo Brand’s video, garnered over 3 million views and attracted attention from mainstream celebrities like Ellie Goulding and Thom Yorke, amplifying the core message to a broader audience.

Comedy as a Catalyst for Change

The collaboration between comedians and climate scientists underscores the potency of humour in driving awareness and action on climate change. The blend of comedy and science clarifies complex environmental issues, making them more relatable to everyday audiences.

Jo Brand’s involvement signals a significant step forward in celebrity advocacy for the environment, echoing similar initiatives by Kevin McCloud, Mary Portas, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, and others.

Urgency Amidst Solutions

Despite readily available solutions like renewable energy, global subsidies for fossil fuels continue to rise, hindering progress towards a sustainable future.

Prof. Mark Maslin says that,

Renewable energy is cheaper, safer, cleaner and more secure than fossil fuels. But globally, according to the International Monetary Fund, we subsidised fossil fuel use to the tune of US$7 trillion (£5.5 trillion) in 2023 – up US$2 trillion on the previous year.

The comedy films from Climate Science Translated call for urgent action, urging governments to ban new fossil fuel investments and transition towards cleaner alternatives.

As the comedy project highlights, the time for action is now. With the climate crisis escalating, it’s imperative for individuals, governments, and communities to unite in the fight against climate change and safeguard the planet for future generations.

Why Comedians?

Research and past experiences all suggest that humour can be used as catalyst for change. Projects like Comedy Relief which managed to raise up over 1.5 billion pounds to support people worldwide.

While comedy in politics is used for satirical purposes, comedy for climate awareness is another matter entirely. As their shows not only bring in millions of people but also provide new perspective on how damaging fossil fuels are to the planet.

Comedians also serve as a voice for these scientists. Comedians are also allowed to swear, which scientists aren’t allowed to do, since they have to act logical and calm so they won’t lose their credibility.

Jo Brand questioned Maslin with,

Was it time for scientists to be allowed to swear, as things are so bad?

In response Maslin said that,

As soon as we “become human” we lose credibility. So, in many ways, Jo Brand is my human side screaming at everyone to do something, now!
