My Picks for the best Coffee Shops and Cafés

Frequency Coffee

Frequency specialty coffee & cocktail bar.

This is one of Islington’s finest places to have a quick bite to eat. The staff was friendly and offered to make sugar syrup for my cold drink, and the coffee was fresh and delicious. This café is local favourite thanks to their atmosphere so you’d probably see that there’s a lot of students and working people who hangout to study or work.

I highly recommend browsing through their selection of exciting pastries – not only were the Lemon Poppy Seed and Cinnamon Carrot pastries very creative, but they were also very tasty. They practically melted in my mouth the moment I took a bite, leaving a delicious aftertaste.

Tucked away on the corner of  Camden Passage is one of the best coffee shops in Islington. One of my favorite lattes in a very long time. Its invigorating flavor and aroma truly made for a pleasant start to the day. This independent roastery quickly became a daily visit and it came to the point where we were on first-name basis with most of their nice staff.

It’s such a refreshing treat to see how their staff are brightly lit with passion and every time we grab a cup of cappuccino, it isn’t the caffeine that sparks us up, but it’s because of the atmosphere walking inside!

Saint Espresso

A group of people sitting outside of a coffee shop.

Saint Espresso might be a bit away from the borough of Islington, but if you take a few minutes wander around and visit this spot, you definitely won’t be disappointed! Separated into two floors it’s a cafe with breakfast and lunch options for their customers and they make a mean ol’ cup of macchiato and flat whites.

My suggestion is to try secure a seat on the downstairs area and watch the world go and pass you by through their large windows. It’s a relaxing and quiet experience and plus, you could take a tour around Camden Town or to other North London attractions.

📍20 Camden High St, London NW1 0JH, United Kingdom

Candid Cafe

A dining room with a wooden table and chairs.

A charming café with an entertaining interior and a cozy “living room” vibe. It’s a great spot to read or have a conversation with friends. The cake was delicious and the staff was very friendly. I will most certainly come back!

Love the place’s rustic, homey vibe, the paintings on the walls, the sofas, the raw wood tables, and the overall artsy decor. If you’re into elegant venues, chain cafés, and the like, you’re probably not going to enjoy this, but if you’re feeling a bit indie… Well, you’re going to adore it!

📍3 Torrens St, London EC1V 1NQ, United Kingdom

Duncan Terrace Cafe

Whether you’re a resident or a tourist in Angel, you’ve gotta try out Duncan Terrace Cafe. It’s a lovely and calm restaurant that pride themselves with their homemade English Breakfast and their Italian pasta.

Also for a place that’s right beside the famous Duncan Terrace Gardens, the price aren’t too expensive. Their menu is also filled with a list of local roasters and classic brunch dishes like eggs benedict with tea or toast with beans.

📍391 City Rd, London EC1V 1NE, United Kingdom

Costa Coffee

A group of people walking past a costa coffee shop.

If you’re looking to find the best spot to set up a mobile work station, then look no further than Costa Coffee. Unlike other shops on upper street and high street, this place is completely quiet! There’s no trendy music in the background, or large groups having screaming matches.

Of course, their caffeinated drinks are absolutely stellar. This place is ideal if you want to hide away from the busy streets of Angel and be a rare productive worker with a good cup to sip on. Lastly, their location is ideal for exploring other parts of Angel and Islington!

📍32 Chapel Market, London N1 9EN, United Kingdom

Kipferl

A restaurant with tables and chairs outside at night.

Austrian kitchen and restaurant open all day in a light-filled, roomy chalet-style setting. Their food just feels like you get transported to Vienna and serving delicious and diverse food, food that I couldn’t possibly pronounce so it’s good that I’m just writing this out.

The Schnitzel and Käsespätzle were amazing. Afterwards we had a coffee and one Apfelstrudel each. It’s also nice that they took t he time to master their other delicacies aside from their Viennese cuisine like their apple cake, which was definitely a must-try!
