Emmy Award Winner and Saturday Night Live alumni, Maya Rudolph is now looking to maybe try out doing stand-up comedy!

Comedy and Stand-Up

Despite being in the comedy business way back to when she first got featured in SNL in 2000, Maya Rudolph never had any stand-up experience. She says on a podcast, The Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard,

I am more comfortable with the idea of being naked in that comedy way more than I used to be. I have no aspirations to become a stand-up but I do think it would be kind of fun to try it… So I feel like it would be interesting. More of a like as a human fun experiment and also just for joy.

Though she doesn’t exactly have any aspirations of being a professional stand-up comedian, she says it would be a bit fun to experiment with the idea. Plus, the notion of hearing her own voice through a microphone, no longer “freak her out”.

Why She Avoided It

Though, Rudolph is well-known for her comedic talents, with her early career joining the improv comedy troupe, The Groundlings, she has never performed any routine, because she thinks the form of stand-up is “naked and exposing”.

In college, you want to be a comedian and I would write stand up and I was like, ‘There’s no way f**king way I’m gonna say any of this publicly ever.

A lot of former SNL members have been known to transition into stand-up comedy and often making big names of themselves like Norm Macdonald, John Mulaney, Pete Davidson. Even newer members like Melissa Villaseñor and Leslie Jones both have their very own specials.

Rudolph co-starred in NBC’s Up All Night and voiced characters in Big Mouth and The Emoji Movie. Her collaboration with Martin Short on Maya & Marty garnered attention, while her series Forever premiered on Amazon Video.

Rudolph’s recent projects include voicing Linda Mitchell in The Mitchells vs. the Machines and Daniela Paguro in Luca. She’s also involved in productions like Russian Doll and Poker Face through her company, Animal Pictures.
