Comedian Jimmy Carr has come under fire for making controversial jokes during a live show at the Orchard West Theatre in Kent.

Audience Member Left “Absolutely Insulted”

Jimmy Carr isn’t exactly known for “clean” jokes and has been slammed multiple times based on multiple different jokes. As part of his warm-up run before his upcoming tour, he performed a show at the Orchard West Theatre in Kent.

This is where he crossed paths with Carly Ahlen, 44, who was in attendance at the show. Carr noticed her in the audience while looking to do some crowd work he he teased her about the beret she’s wearing. Ahlen then lifted it up and revealed her hearing aid.

I hoped he was at least a decent guy and would move on, knowing I was deaf… It didn’t work. It had the opposite effect as I was like a sitting deaf duck now.

Carr Continues

Later on in the show, Carr saw that Ahlen was using her phone, she was using a transcribing app to understand what Carr was saying, the comedian then joked how she might be using her phone to “call for backup from the French resistance”

And then followed it up by saying,

You can say what you want about deaf people because they can’t hear you.

This was the last straw for the wildlife rescuer, Ahlen said,

I was shocked – this isn’t comedy. There’s a joke and then there’s absolutely insulting. It’s vile to the deaf community… It’s just not acceptable. He doesn’t need to do that – he’s rich enough. I’ve spent far too long feeling miserable and ashamed of my hearing loss because of the stigma attached to it.

Warnings on Carr’s Show

Fans are saying that Ahlen shouldn’t be surprised as to how Jimmy Carr operates. The comedian has been making headlines for a lot of edgy jokes and controversies from joking about gipsies, the Holocaust, 9/11, Down’s Syndrome, dwarfism, and yes, even deafness.

Deafness is getting to be quite a problem for me, and I never thought I’d hear myself say that.

His current tour even has the disclaimer that,

Some people are repelled by Jimmy’s dark brand of comedy. This show is not for them. But if it’s the kind of thing you like, then this is the kind of thing you’ll like.
