Jimmy Kimmel’s hosting of the Oscar’s wasn’t the thing that caught the fans’ attention because fans say that fellow comedian John Mulaney stole the show in the two minutes it took to introduce an award.

Kimmel Hosting

Jimmy Kimmel is a regular host of The Academy Awards as he hosted the awards last year and few years prior, but for this year he is being slammed for his performance mainly due to a few jokes directed at Robert Downey Jr. and Emma Stone.

Kimmel first addressed Robert Downey Jr. with a joke saying that,

This is the highest point of Robert Downey Jr’s career… well, one of the highest points.

This was in reference to RDJ’s previous struggles with drug addiction. After RDJ smiles and gestures with tapping his nose Kimmel then continues with,

Was that too on the nose or was that a drug motion you made?

Fans say that the actor looked visibly irate and mentioned that the he was mouthing “Keep it going” sarcastically.

Kimmel is also under fire for his joke aimed at Emma Stone. When Stone’s movie was nominated, clips of the film were played on the big screen and Kimmel quips with,

Those were all the parts of ‘Poor Things’ that we’re allowed to show on TV.

In reference to the many racy scenes in the R-rated film. The camera then cuts to a shot of Stone reacting to the joke with users speculating that she mouthed off “What a pr**k”. Though Stone is infamously sarcastic and could be making a joke of her own.

The Oscars

The Oscars had a huge bump in viewership last year with Kimmel as the host so having him back was the “safer” option, someone who succeeded and had experience with the whole event.

However, just a few hours after he wrapped up his opening monologue, people flocked towards X, or Twitter to voice out their complaints that the whole opening was not only offensive for the actors but it was simply too long and not as funny as they expected.

His late-night sidekick, Guillermo Rodriguez was also brought in during the event and was actually well-received, fans loved his appearance and he even had a chance to showcase his wit by bringing everyone in the audience shots of tequila and gave a toast during the awards.

I love everyone here and I love you Jimmy and I love tequila and I love my beautiful wife Miss Charlize Theron (They are not in a relationship). I love you. You’re my angel.

The Laughs

Kimmel wasn’t slammed by the internet for his entire performance as most notably he took a minute to recognize the hard work of below-the-line union workers that contributed to make the Oscars.

We were able to make a deal because of the people who rallied beside us… Before we celebrate ourselves, let’s have a very well-deserved round of applause for the people who work behind the scenes: the Teamsters, the truck drivers, the lighting crew, sound, camera, gaffers, grips. That’s right. All the people who refused to cross the picket line

Being a comedian of course, Kimmel generated lots of laughs, with skits that seemed to be on-theme with his late-night show and other random occurrences like John Cena coming up to the stage completely naked to announce Best Costume.

He had a lot of laughs when he took a jab at former U.S president Donald Trump who wrote a scathing review on Truth Social that said,

Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars? His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be. Get rid of Kimmel and perhaps replace him with another washed up, but cheap, ABC talent, George Slopanopoulos… He would make everybody on stage look bigger, stronger, and more glamorous.

Kimmel stopped reading the entire review and simply quipped,

Isn’t it past your jail time?

Brief Appearance From Mulaney

John Mulaney appeared for a few minutes just to announce the film with the Best Sound and he completely captivated online fans. He started off with a quick joke from the Madamme Web trailer, the 2024 superhero movie that wasn’t exactly critically well-received.

He then went off on a 90 second rant that recapped the movie “Field of Dreams” with no stutters or extra words, and by the end of it the audience were loudly cheering.

More Mulaney

His short appearance was enough to make lots of fans request on social media that Mulaney should take over hosting the Academy Awards,

The question on why he isn’t hosting the Oscars has been brought up time and time again, even 2 months ago when he delivered an opening monologue at the 14th Governor Awards.

Clips and tweets from the audience on online users all said that Mulaney should be given the opportunity and his successful performance during the Governor Awards should serve as an audition to hosting next year’s Oscars.

Even back in 2017, Mulaney (along with Nick Kroll) at the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards, impressed so many people with their opening monologue that there were already comments that they should host the Oscars.

Though we’re not exactly movie buffs, we love ALL things comedy especially when comedians are hosting prestigious awards shows. Though there are no news whether or not Mulaney would have a bigger role than just presenting one award, we are eager in wait!
