Eddie Izzard, the renowned comic, is set to grace the London stage with a solo rendition of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Following a successful stint in New York, where the show recently extended its run until April 14, Izzard’s adaptation of the classic play will run for six weeks at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, starting from May 23.
This production marks Izzard’s second solo theatrical venture, following last year’s performance of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, which received acclaim both in New York and London.
Adapted by the comic’s brother, Mark, and directed by Selina Cadell, both shows promise an engaging theatrical experience. The trio have actually been through a lot together and you could read more about that HERE!
In Hamlet, Izzard will embody a staggering 23 characters, showcasing her versatility and dedication to the craft. Izzard expressed her enthusiasm for the role, stating,
I have always gravitated towards playing complex and challenging characters, and Hamlet is the ultimate. This is a production for everyone, a timeless drama with an accidental hero. Selina, Mark and I want audiences to see and hear an accessible, touching, scary and dramatic Hamlet.
While some reviews have lauded Izzard’s performance, others have been more critical. The Daily Telegraph awarded the show four stars, praising its intimacy and Izzard’s impressive portrayal.
However, the New York Times offered a more nuanced perspective, noting Izzard’s comedic talent but suggesting that the constraints of the play may have hindered her performance.
Tickets for the London run of Hamlet will be available for purchase starting at 10 am on Wednesday. You could also check out their website for dates and venue information HERE.
