Iconic comedian Dave Attell has a new Netflix special released on Netflix, 10 years after his last special, Road Work was released in 2014.

Bumping Mics

Though technically not his ‘last’ special as back in 2018 he performed ‘Bumping Mics’ with Jeff Ross and many fans consider that to be both Jeff Ross’ and Dave Attell’s last comedy performances.

It’s a 3-part series on Netflix where they would essentially just be roasting each other, audiences, celebrity guests, with some heartwarming moments showing the ordinary lives of two sprinkled inbetween.

Bumping Mics served as more of a concept special for both of them which was initially supposed to be only done for fun. According to an interview if it wasn’t for Ross, ‘Bumping Mics’ never would have happened, as it was because of him they started doing it in casinos and theatres.

Eventually Netflix noticed it and suggested that they do a series instead with guests mixed in with different material per episode, Ross describes it as their,

It’s like our greatest hits, in a way. It’s our best jokes mixed in with our best friends. And one of my best friends directed it. It was really a family affair.

The Crowds For Attell

The special was taped on San Francisco which Attell comments to be an “untouched” land in taping specials. Though he performed over at SF for decades now, he did notice that most of the crowd there do appreciate his jokes, and aren’t quick to offend compared to a few years ago.

Though Attell says that he gets less groans and moans because the crowd that comes to his show are just huge fans of his. They know his sense of humour and they know how his stories and shows usually go.

On a recent ‘We Think We Might Be Drunk’ podcast where Sam Morril mentioned that Dave’s gigs were just the open for because he has incredible crowds, Dave said,

I really do have great crowds. Anything goes with these people, they really don’t take offense with anything, and they really love jokes. I think that’s a hard crowd to find now, a lot of these younger crowds I think, when they smell a setup and then they kind of feel like they have the right to turn off because it’s not your personal truth.

On his new special ‘Hot Cross Buns’ he performed his signature wit and rapid-fire style that earned this loyal fanbase and the first five minutes of the special features a bunch of the crowd rocking back and forth from laughter.

Attell’s Recent Appearances

Though Dave Attell is for the most part, out of the spotlight since he did Bumping Mics, there is one thing that remains a constant with him and that is his support for other comedians!

His X page is basically filled with promotions for other comics and on recent podcast appearances, he notes that comics like Nate Bergatze and Shane Gillis are the comics who are leading the charge of taking comedy to the “next level”.

On the podcast with Mark Normand and Sam Morril, he says, referring to the circle of comedians surrounding them,

I think you guys power the (comedy) boom

He also mentions a lot of other comedians who are contributing a lot to the comedy scene and the lasting impact of legendary comedians like George Carlin and more. Along with mentioning that his protégés are now hugely successful, Morril being one of them.

Fan Reviews of the Special

Comedy fans online note that his special had them laughing so much that they practically can’t remember one joke. A lot of users also commented that his new special is one of if not his best one even beating out the fan-favourite ‘Skanks for the memories’ back in 2008.

Other people also say that despite being the last time they’ve seen Attell performing was a few years ago, it’s nice that he didn’t lose his touch and still delivered tons of jokes packed into one hour.

And without spoiling anything, the ending of the special left audiences strangely sentimental. Without context, it involves a musical instrument, some roasts for the crowd, and seals, literally seals the animal kind you find at a pier.
