If you’re a comedian, It’s easy to fall into unhealthy habits like eating junk food, staying up too late, and neglecting exercise when you’re constantly on the move.

After a brutal bomb, you may want to eat your feelings away, and after a killer set, you may want to drink to celebrate, so either way, you’re ending up in a kebab shop.

Comedy doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your health. In this article, we’re going to share some tips for balancing late nights and healthy living, so you can do comedy without sacrificing your well-being.

Tip 1: Ali Wong – Prioritizing sleep

Sleep is crucial for your overall health and well-being, and you’re not gonna write that genius joke, when you can’t even keep your eyes open. To prioritize sleep, start by creating a consistent sleep routine.

Ali Wong shared in an interview that she makes sure to take a nap every day before her evening performances. She says that the nap recharges her, helps her focus, and gives her the energy to deliver a great performance.

If taking naps isn’t an option for you, try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This routine can help regulate your body’s internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up naturally. Additionally, make sure your sleeping environment is conducive to sleep. Invest in comfortable bedding, keep the room cool and dark, and minimize noise and distractions. I personally use melatonin or a sleep supplement when I have trouble falling asleep. These simple adjustments can help you fall asleep faster and improve the quality of your sleep. Remember, getting enough rest is essential for your body to recover and function properly. So, make sleep a priority, and you’ll reap the benefits both on and off the stage.

Tip 2: Tom Papa – Maintain a Balanced Diet and Stay Hydrated

Tom Papa insists on focusing on avoiding processed foods and added sugars is key to maintaining a healthy diet. “I try to eat real food, nothing that comes out of a package. Lots of vegetables, good meat, and good fat. It gives me the energy I need to perform,” he says. Conversely, a diet high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats can leave you feeling sluggish and unmotivated.

By following a balanced diet and staying hydrated, you’ll have the stamina to perform at your best and maintain a consistent career. Plus, feeling better physically and mentally can have a positive impact on your overall well-being. So, skip the processed junk and grab a glass of water – your body and your career will thank you!

Amy Schumer and Kevin Hart both stress the importance of self-care in their routines, and for good reason.

Taking care of yourself physically and mentally is crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and staying at the top of your game as a comedian. Self-care can come in many forms, like practicing meditation, reading a book, or taking a relaxing bath. The key is to prioritize your well-being.

Amy Schumer emphasizes the importance of taking time for herself, saying, “It’s important to take a step back and take care of yourself. For me, that means taking a day off and doing something for myself, whether it’s going for a hike or taking a yoga class.” Meanwhile, Kevin Hart stresses the importance of exercise, which helps him stay focused and motivated, and is a crucial part of his daily routine.

But you don’t have to hit the gym to stay active. There are plenty of ways to get moving, like going for a walk or run, doing yoga or Pilates, or even just dancing around your hotel room. Find an activity that you enjoy and stick with it.
