Early Beginnings in Comedy

Ari Shaffir’s venture into the world of comedy started during his early twenties with his first and only comedy performance at an open mic night in a Northern Virginia sports comedy venue. After completing his university education, he relocated to Los Angeles to chase his dreams as a stand-up comedian. Working at The Comedy Store, he gradually moved from answering phones to becoming a paid regular, under the mentorship of owner Mitzi Shore.

Comedic Influences and Bicoastal Life

Shaffir’s comedic influences blossomed from watching showcase comedy programs on TV and the performances of comedians on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Bill Burr stands as his favorite living comedian. In 2012, he adopted a bicoastal lifestyle, residing in both Los Angeles and New York City. By 2015, he fully embraced New York as his home.

Breaking into the Comedy Scene

Shaffir’s entry into the limelight occurred through the viral video series “The Amazing Racist.” He also found his place as an opening act for Joe Rogan, leading to tours alongside notable comics like Joey Diaz, Tom Segura, and Duncan Trussell. In 2009, he graced the Montreal Comedy Festival with his presence, showcasing his talents in The Nasty Show.

Creating and Hosting: This Is Not Happening

Shaffir’s creativity shone when he produced and hosted the monthly live show “This Is Not Happening” in collaboration with Eric Abrams. This stand-up comedy series featured comedians sharing true-life stories around specific themes. The show gained prominence, transitioning from web series to a Comedy Central hit that premiered in January 2015.

Shifting Focus and Specials

After selling his third special, “Double Negative,” to Netflix, Shaffir departed from “This Is Not Happening.” He continued to captivate audiences with his podcast “Skeptic Tank,” where he explored a range of subjects with fellow comedians. His stand-up journey continued with releases like “Revenge for the Holocaust,” “Paid Regular,” and “Double Negative,” showcasing his comedic prowess.

A Multifaceted Talent

Shaffir extended his talents beyond stand-up, featuring in commercials for brands like Coke Zero, Subway, Dominos, and Bud Light. He even made a comedic appearance in the film “Keeping Up with the Joneses” (2016). Despite his ventures, he remained dedicated to the stage and expressed little interest in pursuing acting that might divert him from his comedic path.

Controversy and Beyond

While Shaffir’s journey is marked by success, he faced controversy due to a tweet insensitive to Kobe Bryant’s passing. Despite such challenges, his comedic legacy continued, including shows like “Ari Shaffir: Jew,” which he premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
