How not to behave at a show

Recently a woman was forcibly ejected from a show for singing full volume during a show. Most comics will have some sort of PTSD from a similarly behaved audience member.

An audience can make or break a show.

Comedy clubs are places where people go to unwind, relax and enjoy a good laugh. As an audience member, it’s important to remember that YOU are an essential part of the experience.

While the comedians on stage provide the entertainment, it’s the audience that creates the energy and atmosphere of the club. Being a good audience member can make a significant difference in the overall enjoyment of the show for everyone.

Here are some tips on how to be a good audience member at a comedy club.

Be respectful

One of the most important things you can do as an audience member is to be respectful. This means refraining from talking during the performance, not heckling the comedians, and avoiding any disruptive behavior. Remember that the performers are professionals, and they have worked hard to create their sets. Interrupting or disrespecting them is not only rude but also shows a lack of appreciation for their craft.

Listen

Comedians thrive on the energy of the audience, so it’s important to actively listen to what they’re saying. Try to engage with the material and react appropriately. Laugh when something is funny, and stay quiet when it’s not. Remember, the comedian is there to make you laugh, so try to give them the chance to do so.

Don’t take it personally

Sometimes comedians will touch on sensitive topics, and it’s important to remember that it’s all in good fun. Don’t take anything the comedian says personally, as they are just trying to entertain the audience. If something does offend you, it’s best to keep it to yourself and not make a scene.

Avoid using your phone

Using your phone during a comedy show is not only disrespectful to the performers but also to the other audience members. It’s distracting and can take away from the overall experience. So, put your phone on silent and resist the temptation to check it during the performance. You’ll enjoy the show much more if you’re fully present and engaged.

Show Some Love

When the show is over, take a moment to show your appreciation. Clap and cheer for the comedians, and consider buying their merchandise or tipping them if they have a tip jar. A little support can go a long way, and it’s a great way to show your appreciation for the hard work they put in.

So, sit back, relax, and get ready to laugh!
